Aimee-Ffion Edwards as Queen and Country

Queen and Country is a 2014 British historical drama directed by John Boorman, who will direct his final film in 2021. It is a loose sequel to his 1987 semi-autobiographical work Hope and Glory, returning to the same protagonist and his family several years later, albeit with a majority of new actors and a number of new characters.

The two films are sufficiently independent that it is not necessary to view both for context.

By joining the Army, Bill Rohan (Callum Turner) fulfils his National Service obligation. He and his friend Percy Hapgood (Caleb Landry Jones) are promoted to sergeant and tasked with instructing new recruits in typing.

They clash with their superior, Sergeant Major Bradley (David Thewlis), a World War II veteran and rule-follower. Bill is accused of undermining morale by sharing discouraging facts about the Korean War with his students.

When he demonstrates that everything he said was previously published in The Times, his case is dismissed. After the two of them and the mischievous orderly Redmond (Pat Shortt) devise a plan to steal a mess clock given to the regiment by Queen Victoria, Percy is less fortunate.

Off the base, Bill falls in love with the enigmatic Ophelia (Tamsin Egerton), while Percy begins a relationship with the mischievous nurse Sophie (Aimee-Ffion Edwards).

Both relationships fail for various reasons, but Bill’s older sister Dawn (Vanessa Kirby) also enters the picture.

Tropes

Dawn cares for Percy so much that she rushes to the station and promises to wait for him following his court martial.

My Sister Is Off-Limits: Percy intentionally provokes Bill, whom he dislikes for having sex with Sophie, to do this. Bill is initially upset, but their friendship recovers as Percy and Dawn develop into a stable couple.

Bradley is regarded as The Neidermeyer by the majority of the unit due to his rules-obsessed and punitive behaviour. It is deconstructed when it is revealed that a significant portion of it is the result of shell-shock from his previous war experiences.

The Ophelia: Indeed, Ophelia lives up to her moniker. Her final separation from Bill occurs when she attempts suicide and is hospitalised.

Bill and Percy peep into a nurse’s dormitory by standing on one another’s shoulders to get a better view through the window. When Sophie gives them more than they bargained for, the plan implodes.

Major Cross, portrayed by Richard E. Grant, is a reasonable authority figure who is primarily concerned with restraining Bradley’s extreme irrationality.

Sophie exposes one of her breasts near the window in response to Bill and Percy peering into the window of her dormitory, with amusing results.

Peaky Blinders

The BBC period crime procedural series Peaky Blinders premiered in 2013. It centres on the Irish Traveller-Romani Shelby family, whose men have returned from World War I and begun to build their street gang into a criminal empire in post-World War I Birmingham.

The street gang is known as the Peaky Blinders, and their hats are also known as Peaky Blinders’ hats. In Peaky Blinders, Cillian Murphy plays the new gangster Tommy Shelby.

Helen McCrory portrays Shelby matriarch Aunt Polly, Sam Neill plays CI Campbell, and Tom Hardy portrays Jewish gangster Alfie Solomons.

Five seasons have been broadcast on both BBC and Netflix. Creator Stephen Knight has revealed that he intends to take the Shelbys up until the start of World War II.

After a brief hiatus due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, it was announced in January 2021 that production had resumed on the Sixth Season and that it would be the show’s final season, although Knight also stated that “the story will continue in another form.”

On August 20, 2020, the puzzle-adventure videogame Peaky Blinders Mastermind was released.

In 2019, Just Games published Peaky Blinders: Under New Management and Steamforged Games published Peaky Blinders: Faster than Truth.
